Iran, Syria to hold first transport joint committee meet

TEHRAN – Tehran will host the first meeting of the Iran-Syria technical transport joint committee from December 2 to 4, an official of the Transportation and Terminals Organization announced here on Sunday.
The potential for cooperation in the road transport as well as cargo and passenger transport problems will be discussed in the meeting, scheduled to be held at the level of transportation director generals, Mohammad Javad Atrchian said.The Mehr News agency quoted Atrchian as saying that cooperation in line with the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) plan and establishment of East-West Transport Corridor will be examined in the meet, as well.
Iran, Russia, India, and Oman signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2000 for the establishment of the INSTC that is considered as one of the important trade routes linking Southeast Asian counties to Russia, Central Asian states, the Caucasus, and Eastern Europe, IRNA reported.
Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Oman, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Syria, Ukraine, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, and Bulgaria constitute the 14 members of the INSTC.
Atrchian expressed hope that the upcoming meeting will help streamline transport between two countries.
